After the final match day of the season, Madira celebrated surviving relegation, having finished the season with 15 points, the same as Gideon Starlets but then came a twist

Madira Soccer Assassins’ joy of beating relegation was short-lived as they were relegated to the FKF Women's National Super League (WNSL) following a mathematical error that instead meant that Nyanza-based Gideon Starlets survived.

Madira and Gideon Starlets were embroiled in a fierce battle against relegation over the last three match days after Kisumu All Starlets and Kisped Queens had been relegated earlier due to the issuance of three walkovers apiece.

After the final match day of the season, Madira celebrated surviving relegation, having finished the season with 15 points, the same as Gideon Starlets but with a superior goal difference of -10 as compared to Gideon’s -18, which left the latter in the relegation zone.

However, upon review by the FKF Leagues and Competitions Committee, one point had been wrongfully awarded to Madira, which, upon correction, reduced their point tally to 14.

How did it happen?

As per the points earned from the field of play, Madira gathered a total of 23 points after their last match against Kenya Police Bullets FC.

However, Madira were docked several points, beginning with six points deducted from their second leg wins over Kisped Queens and Kisumu All Starlets, whose second leg results were all revoked after they were relegated for issuing three walkovers apiece.

Additionally, the Vihiga-based outfit were deducted three points for boycotting their match against Vihiga Queens, which was scheduled for 15 March.

With a total deduction of nine points, Madira’s final tally was 14, but was erroneously updated by FKF as 15, which, upon correction, left them in the red zone with one point less than Gideon.

In effect, Madira’s return to the top flight lasted just one season while Gideon managed to survive relegation in their maiden season in top-tier football.

The reinstatement of Gideon means that the Nyanza region, which had seen all its three clubs face the chop, will now have Gideon representing them in the WPL next season.

The 2025/26 WPL title was won by Kenya Police Bullets after amassing 52 points, five more than second-placed Ulinzi Starlets, with Kibera Soccer Women coming a distant third with 34 points.
