Just a day after the national team marked their CHAN debut with a momentous victory, the Head of State disbursed a total of Ksh42 million through the Ministry of Sports.
The funds covered bonuses for 27 players and 15 technical bench officials, all of whom were rewarded for the country’s breakthrough performance on the continental stage.
“Yes, it's true; the president has honoured his promise. We received the money today as promised by the president when he visited the team last night after the match,” confirmed Harambee Stars winger Brian Michira to Mozzart Sport.
The incentive was part of a broader, performance-based reward scheme unveiled by President Ruto on Saturday.
The package includes Ksh1 million for every win, Ksh500,000 for a draw, Ksh60 million for reaching the quarter-finals, Ksh70 million for a semi-final berth, and a staggering Ksh600 million should the team lift the CHAN trophy.
The win over DR Congo was sealed by Gor Mahia captain Austin Odhiambo, whose expertly taken goal at the stroke of halftime secured all three points.
The result placed Kenya joint-top of Group A with Morocco, who lead by virtue of a superior goal difference after their 2-0 win against Angola.
With morale at an all-time high and presidential backing firmly behind them, Harambee Stars are now preparing to face Angola in their second group match.
A win would not only edge them closer to a quarter-final berth but also guarantee yet another Ksh1 million payday, raising the stakes and expectations as the tournament unfolds.
Aside from Kenya and DR Congo, Morocco, Angola and Zambia complete Group A with all the matches slated for Kasarani and Nyayo National Stadium.
