Sharks will return to action after the international break with a clash against APS Bomet, hoping Kesa’s emergence can spark a turnaround in their season.
Kariobangi Sharks head coach William Muluya has hailed Markvivan Kesa as the next big name in Kenyan football after the young striker opened his FKF Premier League account in Sunday’s 2-1 derby win over Mathare United.
Kesa, who joined Sharks from Naivas FC during the off season, has started all four of the team’s league matches so far.
Against Mathare, he delivered his best performance yet, forcing an own goal before scoring the winner to hand Sharks their first victory of the campaign after three failed attempts.
The hard fought derby was ultimately decided by the 21-year-old forward, who is quickly establishing himself as Sharks’ go-to man.
Eli Asieche pulled one back for Mathare with a second half free kick, but Sharks held firm to secure maximum points.
In his post match remarks, Muluya who has overseen the rise of strikers like Masoud Juma, John Makwata and Erick Kapaito expressed belief that Kesa could be the latest to join that list of standout forwards.
“He is finally off the mark. Now it is upon him to keep working harder. Honestly, I believe we are in the process of developing another great striker in him,” Muluya said.
The coach attributed the win to his team’s resilience rather than tactical superiority, acknowledging Mathare’s technical strength and experience.
“I can sum it up as a win built on character. This league is tough, and we had gone 270 minutes without scoring. Today we did not win because of tactics or technical ability. When you look at Mathare, technically they have outstanding players with vast experience. But our determination carried us through,” he added.
Despite the victory, Muluya admitted that injuries remain a pressing concern for Sharks, with up to 12 players sidelined.
He conceded that the coaching staff must also take responsibility for the situation.
“The injuries are a big concern. We have 12 players out. I do not think it is purely due to fixture congestion; maybe it goes back to how we train.
As coaches, we have to admit we also make mistakes. Looking at the medical history of some players, like Ally Salum, he will be out for a longer period. That shows perhaps we are not doing enough to keep them fit and available,” he noted.
