Both clubs have been issued with charge letters and given until 5:00 PM on Tuesday, 23 December, to submit their responses; failure to which the Disciplinary Committee will proceed to determine sanctions without further reference to them.

In a letter addressed to one of the clubs, the FKF Disciplinary Committee cites the match referee’s report, which alleges that supporters caused serious safety and security breaches that directly led to the match being abandoned.

The report further notes the destruction of property within the stadium, including an Azam TV outside broadcast (OB) van.

“A large number of your spectators caused serious safety and security concerns for other spectators, leading to major security breaches.

This resulted in the abandonment of the match, including the destruction of the Azam OB van and other property within the stadium,” the letter states.

The FKF Premier League fixture descended into chaos in the 58th minute after Nairobi United’s Ovella Ochieng equalised to cancel out Ebenezer Adukwaw’s first-half opener for Gor Mahia.

Violence broke out in the orange-coloured stands between Gates 2 and 3, forcing match officials to call off the game.

Videos widely circulated on social media showed fans engaging in physical confrontations, though the exact trigger remains unclear.

Sources, however, indicate that provocation by one group may have escalated into a full-scale clash involving supporters from both sides.

FKF president Hussein Mohammed strongly condemned the violence and confirmed that formal disciplinary processes had been activated.

“I strongly condemn the acts of hooliganism that forced the abandonment of today’s (Sunday) Nairobi United vs Gor Mahia match. This behaviour will not be tolerated in Kenyan football,” Hussein said.

“FKF has formally initiated disciplinary processes, and the matter has been referred to our judicial bodies for determination. Club and match officials are required to record statements while criminal investigations are being pursued with the relevant authorities.”

Hussein also expressed solidarity with FKF Premier League broadcast partners Azam TV Kenya following the vandalism of their equipment.

“I also stand with Azam TV Kenya following the vandalism of their broadcast van. Our partners must be protected, and those responsible will be held accountable,” he added.

Gor Mahia have since distanced themselves from the violence, claiming their supporters were victims of the unrest. In a letter to FKF Leagues and Competitions Head Frank Ogola, Gor Mahia Secretary General Nick Arum blamed the incident on poor crowd control by the home team.

“During the 60th minute, the home fans engaged in disruptive behaviour by throwing objects onto the field in what was purported to be a celebration of their equalising goal. This reckless conduct created a significant security risk and ultimately led to the abandonment of the match,” Arum wrote.

He further claimed that several Gor Mahia supporters were injured and that the club’s team bus sustained extensive damage, attributing the incident to inadequate match-day security and poor deployment of stewards and police officers.

Nairobi United, while condemning the violence, called for calm and wished those injured a quick recovery.

“Football is meant to unite communities, inspire passion, and provide a safe environment for players, fans, and all stakeholders.

Hooliganism has no place in football, and the scenes witnessed today go against the values we stand for as a club and as a sporting community,” the club said in part.
