Not even two reds and eye-pleasing Angeball could break the Reds. But Matip did!

The Spurs beat Jurgen Klopp's team 2-1 thanks to a stoppage-time own goal by Joel Matip

What a tragedy for Joel Matip, Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool squad and the millions of their fans around the world!

In a split second, the heroic battle of a nine-man Reds turned into genuine misery. And to make it worse, it were not the Spurs that knocked out the visitors but one of their today's most valuable players, Matip. A shocking own goal in the dying seconds provided us with an anticlimax we could all but anticipate.

Until that, it was a spectacular skirmish of two evenly-matched sides, and it would be deserved that we have seen a draw, but sometimes football is just like that. Over-emotional and not fair enough.

But what a game that was!

Ange Postecoglou's side was flying on the wings of their terrific attacking triangle Maddison-Richarlison-Son. Jurgen Klopp's army responded with a brave attack despite seeing two of their players being sent off, maybe not rightfully, though.

The tie maybe lacked some attacking firepower in the opening half an hour, but we were taken into a full-scale football wonderland from that moment on. The Spurs' so-called son-alliance, comprised of Son, Richarlison and Maddison, made sure we stood from our seats in the 35th minute. Tottenham smooth operator Maddison kick-started a three-piece masterpiece, with Richarlison linking up the captain for a mouth-watering opener.

A few minutes prior, Curtis Jones was sent off due to a reckless tackle, but those two heavy blows didn't discourage Klopp's red army too much. In their already familiar manner, they opted for an instant offence, which proved hazardous yet praiseworthy.

Van Dijk found himself in the rival's area, heading it straight to his compatriot Cody Gakpo on the edge of the six-yard box, who routinely converted it to level the score, 1-1.

The first half was already clocking some 50 minutes when Salah sent a spectacular cross, finding Luis Diaz on the far post, but his effort was slightly off.

The return from the break brought us a high-flying Spurs, eager to wrap up the match as soon as possible. However, they didn't count on remarkable Alisson between the sticks, as the Brazilian stepped up with two out-of-this-world saves. The first one - to deny Maddison's gorgeous mid-range shot - probably deserves the save of the season award. The self-esteem he got from it played its part in the second one when Son launched a stunning volley, which he tipped just inches over the bar.

But the Red's issues were far from over. Diogo Jota, who came in for injured Gakpo after the interval, picked up two yellow cards in the span of just two minutes, and the nine-men Reds were with their backs to the wall.

Even so, the guests kept their composure, and almost everyone at the stadium, let alone around the globe, was sure we were heading to a draw. And then, a last-gasp cross from the right, Matip wanted to clear it firmly, but instead of doing so, he launched the ball straight under the crossbar for an infinite sorrow of the Reds. And the jubilation of the reborn Spurs.
