Not the best timing — Pochettino shows up at a Tottenham match

At a time when Spurs are hitting rock bottom, their former coach will be present at their Champions League match

Mauricio Pochettino is making a high-profile return to the scene of one of his most painful European memories. The 54-year-old USMNT head coach is set to attend tonight’s Champions League first-leg clash between Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur at the Metropolitano, appearing as an official guest of his former Spanish club.

This will mark Pochettino’s first time watching Tottenham in person since leaving London, a poignant moment given the venue’s significance in his career.

It was at this very stadium in June 2019 that Pochettino guided Spurs to their first-ever Champions League final, only to fall 2-0 to Liverpool. Just five months later, he was dismissed, bringing an end to a transformative five-and-a-half-year spell at the club.

While he has faced Spurs twice as Chelsea manager, tonight’s fixture is unique: he will be observing the team from the stands during a competitive European tie.

Beyond nostalgia, Pochettino’s visit has a professional angle. He is keeping a close eye on midfielder Johnny Cardoso, who is vying for a regular spot in the USMNT setup ahead of the World Cup.

Cardoso has experienced a mixed season under Diego Simeone, starting 12 league matches and appearing in five of Atletico’s ten Champions League fixtures so far. Pochettino will use tonight as an opportunity to evaluate how his key Europe-based players perform against top-level opposition — an assessment that could influence the final World Cup roster.

Naturally, the former Tottenham boss’s presence is bound to spark speculation about a sensational return to the club. Spurs are searching for a permanent successor to Thomas Frank, who was sacked last month, with Igor Tudor serving as interim manager until the season’s end.

Pochettino has always maintained a strong affection for Tottenham, stating last December that he was “always thinking” about a Premier League comeback. The bond with the Spurs supporters remains strong, and his attendance at Atletico adds another layer of intrigue amid one of the club’s most turbulent periods in recent memory.

While the Champions League tie carries glamour, Tudor has been blunt about Tottenham’s precarious domestic position. The club sits just one point above the relegation zone after the interim manager lost his first three games in charge.

Speaking ahead of the match, Tudor acknowledged: “We’re playing against a team with Champions League experience and quality. We need to do our best in a period where we must grow.”

He emphasized that survival in the Premier League is the priority: “Our first aim is the Premier League, and this needs to be said publicly. That doesn’t mean we don’t want to advance in Europe. Every game is important, and this is an opportunity to grow. It’s a completely different challenge against a team with Champions League history, experience, and quality.”
