Tanzanian Oscar Paul was under pressure to score his first goal for Kakamega Homeboyz

Last week, Kakamega Homeboyz coach Patrick Odhiambo jumped to the defence of Tanzanian forward Oscar Paul, who was under pressure to open his goal account at the club.

Paul had not scored a goal on Kenyan soil at a competitive level since joining Homeboyz in the off-season transfer window from Tanzania Prisons.

The difficult start of life in the Kenyan league saw Odhiambo defend the former Tanzania U23 striker, saying it was just a matter of time before his lethalness in front of the goal could be seen and felt.

Paul answered his critics in the right way after finding the back of the net on Sunday to inspire Homeboyz to a 1-0 win over Ulinzi Stars at the Lang’ata Sports Complex.

Paul poked home a ball from Enock Masinza deep into stoppage time to see his side pick up their third win in a row.

The goal relieved pressure on his shoulders, as did Odhiambo, who had been showing faith in him despite not scoring in past assignments.

“I knew at some point he would score. It was obvious that he would take time to settle in and learn a thing or two about Kenyan football. I am glad his goal got the team maximum points in a tough fixture,” said Odhiambo.

Paul came off the bench in the second half, replacing Moses Shumah, who was a suspension risk having been booked in the first half.

The win over Ulinzi also left the former Gor Mahia assistant coach satisfied with the progress the team has been making.

Homeboyz kicked off the season on the wrong footing but appear to be stabilising as they are placed fourth with 21 points, four off log leaders Posta Rangers.

“I am happy with the way the players are expressing themselves. We didn’t have the best starts, but I am satisfied with the steps we are taking. We have been punished before while playing away from home, but in the game against Ulinzi, we showed character and confidence to fight up to the last whistle,” he stated.
