Nairobi United head coach Godfrey “Solo” Oduor has explained why Ugandan star Mustapha Kizza has been starting from the bench.
Naibois fans and Kenyan football lovers at large have been wondering why the former CF Montréal man has not been featuring in the starting eleven in recent times.
Kizza once again started on the bench in their FKF Premier League match against Kakamega Homeboyz on Wednesday 8 April but still showed his class, curling a beautiful free kick into the back of the net in the 70th minute which was an equaliser that ensured the match ended in a 2-2 draw.
In his post match press conference Oduor was put to task to explain his decision not to start the 26 year old.
“Kizza initially started some matches when he came in but then he was fasting during Ramadan when we largely used him as a substitute,” said Oduor.
“Once the holy month was over there were players who had stepped up and so he had to once again fight for his place which I can see he is doing brilliantly,” he added.
The draw against Homeboyz meant that the Mozzart Bet Cup defending champions have now won just one match in six attempts. With pressure mounting on Oduor he responded calmly to the matter.
“Pressure is the nature of this job. There is always pressure whether you win or lose. Even the Gor Mahia coach is under pressure yet he is on top of the log,” he noted.
Naibois are now seventh on the league table with 39 points, 18 behind league leaders Gor Mahia. With seven matches to play before the end of the season it would take a miracle for the league newcomers to win the FKF Premier League title.
However they still have a chance to play continental football next season through the Mozzart Bet Cup where they will face Posta Rangers in a Round of 16 tie on Sunday 12 April at the Moi International Sports Centre Kasarani.
