The Kenya Police striker scored the only goal as South Sudan beat Kenya in an international friendly match at Kasarani on Tuesday
Kenya Police forward Tito Okello is still over the moon after helping South Sudan edge Harambee Stars in a friendly match on Tuesday at Kasarani Stadium.
Okello struck barely two minutes into the game to hand South Sudan their first ever win over Kenya as well something to smile about given that the youngest African nation had previously suffered a 4-0 defeat in the hands of Mali.
Stars defeat to South Sudan elicited criticism with coach Engin Firat, and his troops being faulted for, letting the thousands who turned up at the facility in order to back the team that had not played at home for close to two years down.
Okello, who joined Police last month says he isn’t sorry despite the fact that his goal was a source of pain for the home fans whom he celebrated right in front of.
“Kenyans have to understand that football is a game of chances and mistakes. I got mine and used it. They should always expect one of the three outcomes in a game of football,” said Okello.
The former Gor Mahia man couldn’t hide his joy after inspiring the youngest African nation to victory against all the odds.
“It feels good to score the match-winning goal. When the fans are against you, you ought to work harder and that’s exactly what we did as a team,” said the former Benfica Macau star.
South Sudan might have carried the day but the former African Lyon player admits that it didn’t come without a prize as the hosts equally put in a shift.
“It wasn’t an easy match at all. We worked hard for it. The Kenyan team was full of confidence as they had beaten Qatar while we had lost to Mali. All we wanted was to win and have or confidence back,” he stated.
With the FIFA week over, the former Bul FC has already shifted focus to club assignments which resume this weekend.
The law enforcers are set to take on returnees Shabana on Saturday at the Raila Odinga Stadium in Homabay, a game Okello intends to feature.
“I want to help my club to the best of my ability,” said the former Vipers forward.
He debuted for the club in round two against Posta Rangers.
