In an exclusive interview with the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA), Pitso Mosimane expressed his reservations about the tournament's team selection process

Mamelodi Sundowns emerged victorious in the inaugural Africa Football League (AFL), yet the spotlight has shifted to coach Pitso Mosimane's apprehensions regarding the selection process for participating teams.

In an exclusive interview with the South African Football Journalists Association (SAFJA), Mosimane questioned the exclusion of big clubs such as Raja Casablanca, Orlando Pirates, and Kaizer Chiefs, wondering why they were not part of the inaugural tournament.

The AFL, featuring just eight teams in its debut season, is poised for expansion in subsequent editions. Mosimane, despite acknowledging the financial benefits, expressed concern about the absence of teams like Raja Club Athletic and South African powerhouses Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs amongst other teams.

"I don't think we should talk about that," Mosimane told SAFJA journalists. "That's a tournament, that's not 'CAF.' If you're talking about this tournament that Sundowns just won, where you handpick, I don't know how many teams? Eight? Eight out of 54 countries so that's a tournament. I don't know."

While appreciating the financial incentives, Mosimane questioned the criteria for team invitations, citing the disparity. He added; "But I don't want to go more into that. But good for money, but it's just a tournament."

Mosimane, who is currently jobless after parting ways with UAE side Al Wahda, also revealed he has offers from several clubs across the world but will only make a decision after the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) next year.
