President Ruto, a renown football fan, made the announcement as he received the entire contingent of the K’Ogalo team at the house on the hill, following their corwning moment last Sunday (31 May), when they were crowned champions of the Kenyan top-tier league for a record-extending 22nd time.
"Today we celebrate something more than a trophy," Ruto said in his speech. "We celebrate resilience, consistency, and teamwork. On behalf of the Government and the people of Kenya, I take this opportunity to extend my warmest congratulations to Gor Mahia."
Admiting to have kept a close eye on Gor Mahia's campaign this season, Ruto, who also sent a congratulatory message to the team upon their title win last weekend, labelled their recent achievement as "remarkable", and one that cemented their status as the most successful football club in the land.
"Gor Mahia's victory reaffirms their place as a pillar of discipline and excellence, setting the standards for success as demonstrated by their ambition and winning culture," the President added.
By virtue of their league win, Gor Mahia, who were represented on the Presidential podium by Club Chairman Ambrose Rachier and the exiting team captain Philemon Otieno, will mark their return to continental football, where they will feature in next season's CAF Champions League.
Given the demands their participation in that tournament will carry, Ruto, obliging to the pleas of Rachier and Otieno, promised a Ksh10 million personal donation, to help the club navigate through all the necessary logistics.
"I have listened to everyone, and I will do evertything necessary the Government is there to support you in your next journey," Ruto, who was presented with a signed Gor Mahia shirt, said. "I will therefore organize to deposit 10 million shillings into your account."
For the playing unit, Ruto obliged to Otieno's rallying cry, promising each of them a Ksh100,000 reward, to go with a Presidential luncheon.
"I have been impressed by your discipline and consistency to winning back the title you relinquished a year ago," the President added. "Your victory going forward is not only for the club, but for Kenya, and we are confident that you will carry our hopes with pride, courage, and distinction."
The team's visit came on the back off a busy week for the team, who have been basking in the glory of their title win. On Thursday, 4 June, team representatives visited Treasury CS John Mbadi in his offices, where he handed the club a total of Ksh3.2 million to be distributed amongst players, officials and fan groups.
A day later, Gor Mahia announced a newly signed agreement with sponsors Kansai Plascon Kenya Limited worth Ksh30 million, to go along with a Ksh1 million bonus for winning the title.
