Ayunga started the match and led the Saints’ attack, coming closest to scoring in the first half when he met Declan John’s corner at the near post in the 23rd minute, only for Kilmarnock goalkeeper Tobi Oluwayemi to punch the ball clear.
The Kenya international was withdrawn in the 56th minute as St. Mirren sought fresh attacking options.
Head coach Stephen Robinson named an unchanged starting XI from the side that beat Livingston 1-0 in the previous week.
Kilmarnock threatened early through Tyreece John-Jules, whose effort was blocked inside five minutes, before Lewis Mayo forced a fine save from Shamal George with a long-range strike in the 17th minute.
St. Mirren responded with growing pressure. Roland Idowu fired narrowly wide midway through the half, while Alex Gogic headed tamely at Oluwayemi shortly before the interval after meeting another delivery from Declan John.
The hosts went close again on the hour mark when substitute Jayden Richardson picked out Dan Nlundulu from close range, but Oluwayemi produced a brilliant save to keep the scores level.
Mikael Mandron later headed over from a corner as Saints pushed for a breakthrough.
Despite sustained late pressure, St. Mirren could not break down a resolute Kilmarnock defence, and the match ended goalless, setting the stage for their next challenge away to Rangers on Tuesday.
Elsewhere, in Lebanon, Masud Juma and Tedy Akumu both started as Nejmeh SC thrashed Al Hikma 3-0 to go top of the league standings in their final assignment of the year.
Hassan Jaafar, Ali El Fadl, and Hussein Siblini were on target for the Lebanese giants, who have now amassed 26 points from 11 league matches. Nejmeh SC will resume league action in mid-January.
