Trent Alexander-Arnold’s return to Liverpool was about much more than football — it was deeply emotional, marked by a heartfelt tribute to Diogo Jota
Trent Alexander-Arnold has paid a heartfelt tribute to his late former teammate Diogo Jota during his emotional return to Anfield.
Jota, 28, and his younger brother Andre — aged 26 and a professional footballer in Portugal’s second division — tragically lost their lives in July after their Lamborghini crashed off the A-52 motorway near Cernadilla. The accident occurred when a tyre burst while the brothers were overtaking another vehicle.
Alexander-Arnold had completed his 8.4 million pounds transfer from Liverpool to Real Madrid just a month before the tragedy. Because of the timing, he had not been able to pay his respects at Anfield — until now. With Real Madrid visiting Merseyside for their Champions League clash against Liverpool on Tuesday night, the England international took the opportunity to honour his friend.
On Monday evening, Alexander-Arnold placed a bouquet of flowers outside Anfield in memory of the Jota brothers. Alongside the flowers was a message that read:
"My mate Diogo. You are so missed but still so loved. Yours and Andre's memory will always live on. I smile every time I think about you and will always remember the great times we shared. Miss you mate, every day. Love Trent and family. Forever 20. YNWA."

To accompany the tribute, he also left a red PlayStation controller — a nod to Jota’s famous passion for gaming — marked with the words: "Forever a champion 20. TAA."
Alexander-Arnold wasn’t alone in his gesture. Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso, himself a former Liverpool midfielder, joined him in paying respects. Defender Dean Huijsen and club icon Emilio Butragueno were also in attendance.

Liverpool officially retired the No. 20 shirt following Jota’s sudden passing. During their time together, Alexander-Arnold and Jota shared the pitch 145 times, winning a Premier League title, an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Community Shield — memories that will live long in the hearts of Reds supporters.
