Goals from Henry Omollo, Hillary Otieno, and Eston Omengo in either half sealed a memorable afternoon for the 2023 Mozzart Bet Cup winners, who at the time of writing sat joint-atop the table with 10 points from five matches.
The encounter, staged under chilly Kakamega conditions, lived up to its billing with both sides showing intent early on.
Homeboyz, buoyed by last weekend’s win, were first to threaten through Oliver Majaka, whose low curling effort from Glen Masava’s pass narrowly missed the target.
Ulinzi, desperate to bounce back from a shock defeat to Mara Sugar FC, almost responded ten minutes in when Paul Odhiambo latched onto a loose ball inside the area but blazed his effort over the bar.
Homeboyz continued to press, with Josphat Lopaga and Glen Masava both going close before their persistence finally paid off in the 27th minute.
A well-taken corner from Boniface Onyango found Henry Omollo, who rose highest to head home and hand the hosts a deserved lead.
The hosts could have doubled their advantage before the break, but Omollo and Hillary Otieno were twice denied by alert defending from Brian Birgen and Sylvain Ricks in the Ulinzi goal.
At the other end, Kevin Thairu tested Edwin Mukolwe, but the Homeboyz shot-stopper stood firm to preserve the narrow lead at halftime.
After the restart, Patrick Odhiambo’s men wasted no time extending their advantage.
Barely two minutes into the second half, Hillary Otieno made it 2-0 after racing onto Omollo’s precise delivery to tap into an empty net.
Ulinzi, however, found a lifeline midway through the half when Boniface Muchiri curled home a superb free-kick from the edge of the box, reducing the deficit and reigniting hope for Danstun Nyaudo’s charges.
The game took another twist in the 70th minute when Omollo, scorer of the opener, was sent off after receiving a second yellow card for a bookable challenge, leaving Homeboyz to finish the contest with ten men.
The numerical disadvantage did little to dampen their resolve. Ten minutes from time, veteran midfielder Eston Omengo stepped up with a moment of brilliance, curling a low drive from a set piece past Ricks to seal all three points and cap a resilient team performance.
The result sees Homeboyz record their third win of the season and move to the joint-top of the log, while Ulinzi Stars’ struggles continue with just a single win from five outings.
