Emotions ran high in what was the legendary South Korean’s final match for Spurs
Heung-min Son’s time with Tottenham appears to be drawing to a close, and his farewell could hardly have been more poignant. The South Korean icon captained Spurs one final time during a preseason friendly in Seoul against Newcastle—a symbolic homecoming that doubled as a goodbye.

The match itself ended in a 1-1 draw, with Brennan Johnson opening the scoring for Spurs and celebrating with Son’s signature gesture. Harvey Barnes leveled for Newcastle before halftime, but the focus was never really on the result. Nearly 65,000 fans packed into the Seoul World Cup Stadium to watch one of their national heroes play what could be his last game in a Tottenham shirt.
At 33, Son was visibly moved by the moment. Subbed off in the second half, he initially smiled as he left the field, receiving a guard of honour from both sets of players. But when he sat on the bench and heard nearly 65,000 fans chanting his name, the emotion overwhelmed him—tears followed.
Son leaves behind an incredible legacy at Spurs: 173 goals in 454 appearances, and the distinction of captaining the club to its first major trophy in 17 years, with victory over Manchester United in the Europa League final last season.

Now in advanced talks with MLS side LAFC, Son admitted the decision to leave wasn’t easy: “The most difficult one I have made in my career.” Reflecting on his journey, he added: “I came to north London as a kid – a very young age, a young boy came to London who even didn't speak English. Leaving this club as a grown man is a very, very proud moment.”
From Seoul to north London and now onto a new chapter—Son’s journey continues, but his bond with Spurs fans remains unbreakable.
