They need to go: Barcelona’s long list of outcasts

Reading Time: 3min | Mon. 07.06.21. | 18:33

The Catalonians need to reduce the huge wage bill quickly

Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia, Emerson done and Memphis Depay in the works, that’s the current score for Barcelona in the transfer market. Georginio Wijnaldum seems to be the one who will get away, as the Dutchman is set to choose bigger wage over playing for European giants and  sign for PSG. Not so bad (so far) for the cash strapped Catalonians, but president Joan Laporta knows that some departures need to happen sooner than later. Not only they have three new players on the books, they also need to balanced the wages, and in the next period, players will leave Kamp Nou.

Some will leave because they didn’t justified their enormous wages, others because they didn’t played good enough, while there are players who had difficulties with injuries and are considered „dead wood“. Players who could (and probably will) leave during the next two months are Philipe Coutinho, Clement Lenglet, Miralem Pjanic, Junior Firpo, Sergi Roberto, Martin Braithwaite and Samuel Umtiti.

Philipe Coutinho, who joined Barca from Liverpool for 22 billion Ksh in 2018, has struggled to be as effective for the Catalans, scoring 24 goals in 90 appearances, and he had a lot of problems with injuries. Not good enough for a player who is on 1.1 billion Ksh wages a year. But Barcelona will have to accept a huge loss in case of the Brazilian, as he will never get such a big transfer fee, and there are not much clubs in the world who are in a position to pay him such a big wage.

French center back pair of Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti are strong favorites for the move. The first one has not been consistent (to say at least) this season, while Umtiti hardly play due to various injuries, mainly connected with his knee, which he refused to operate.

Miralem Pjanic is another player on a high wage (1.1 billion) doing nothing. He didn’t fit at all into Koeman’s plans, and a sale or a season long loan is on the cards. Unlike Coutinho, the Bosnian midfielder has a suitor, only one, but powerful enough to pay his wages in case of a loan: Juventus.

Junior Firpo is one of those players for whome Barcelona was too big when he signed from Real Betis, and he is likely to go away.  Jordi Alba is 32, but still strong enough for Koeman, and the club is negotiating his wage reduction in order to stay at Kamp Nou.

Sergi Roberto is on a 1.3 billion Ksh wage and Barca will be happy to get rid of him, while Martin Braithwaite was never a name big enough for Barcelona, and with Aguero in the picture, a long list of strikers needs to be trimmed down.
