The Cameroonian FA president understood Thiaw's actions in the AFCON final
One of the most exciting and entertaining AFCON final in decades is over, but echoes are still there. A disallowed goal for the Lions of Teranga and a soft penalty which enraged Senegal coach Pape Thiaw, who even sent his players back to the locker room to put pressure on the governing bodies and then the the missed ‘panenka‘...all those things made this final an unbelievable event. These situations will be talked about for weeks, not days, and one of them is Samuel Eto‘o.
The former football star and current president of the Cameroonian FA is one of the rare people who supported Thiaw and his decision to send his players into the locker room.
"I was sanctioned with a four-match ban because I refused to make that decision. Emotions are sometimes uncontrollable, and at one point during the Cameroon-Morocco match, there was a lot of emotion, and one of my compatriots suggested I withdraw the team" On a whim, I could have made that decision. I don't think I'm going to blame the Senegalese coach. On the contrary, he had the courage to defend his team. You have to take that kind of risk" said Eto‘o to France 24.
Pape Thiaw apologized afterwards, but still faces serious consequences. Samuel Eto'o is still supporting him.
"In the end, Senegal wins and that's what I want to remember. Now, those in charge of investigating and looking at what went wrong will take responsibility. But the fact remains that there are emotions involved in a football match" said Eto‘o.
