The winger exits as a free agent after expiry of his contract with the club

Peter Thiong’o has confirmed his departure from AFC Leopards after just over two years at the club, with his destination still unknown.

The winger has been with the Leopards since October 2020. He was acquired by the Bosman rule from Kakamega Homeboyz, and after serving the club for 33 months, he departs yet again as a free agent.

Ulinzi Stars were reportedly keen on securing his services, but after talks, the two parties failed to strike a deal, and the former St. Joseph’s man will now be looking for a new home before the transfer window closes in just under three weeks.

The player has taken to social media to announce his departure from the den. He went on to wish the club well.

"The Kenya Premier League is back. Thank you, AFC Leopards, for the time I have been there. The love from the playing unit, the technical stuff, and the fun were great. I just want to wish the team the best of luck this season. From Nakuru, Dundori, we say thank you, AFC Leopard," read his social media post.

Thiong’o and Eugene Mukangula fell out of favour at the Den towards the end of last season. A go-slow by players over salary delays resulted in the duo, who were serving in leadership positions, being stripped of the captaincy roles.

Club secretary general Gilbert Andugu then made it clear that the two would depart when their contracts expire. The pair were not offered new deals, although Mukangula remains hopeful of earning a renewal at the club.

Other players who have left the club include Boniface Mukhekhe, Collins Shivachi, Tedian Esilaba, Ojo, and Olaniyi. Eric Mbithi, Zachary Njite, and Nesta Olum have been made available for loan moves.
