Time to go back: Moyes signs for Everton

The Friedkin Group, who also owns AS Roma, are well known for their not so great history with coaches. In Italy, they didn’t hesitate to sack Jose Mourinho last season, and they have made three coaching changes since! So when they took over Everton on December 19th 2024, all eyes were on Sean Dyche and the writing was on the wall. Concerns were mounting following a run of one win in 11 matches and even thou it’s safe to say that Dyche wouldn’t allow Everton to be relegated, the new owners wanted to have a clean slate at the start of their tenure in the club so they opted for a new coach. Or the old one, depends how do you look at it. The appointment of David Moyes, who was in the dugout at Goodison part for than 500 matches from 2002 to 2013 was made official today, and the PR department can be happy too, as this appointment will surely gain points to the new owners. Everton fans knows the difficulties in the club and are aware that appointments like Carlo Ancelotti are not real for the time being, so seeing David back in the club is certainly a good thing.

The former Manchester Untied and West Ham manager was also happy to be back in Liverpool.

“It’s great to be back! I enjoyed 11 wonderful and successful years at Everton and didn’t hesitate when I was offered the opportunity to rejoin this great club. I’m excited to be working with The Friedkin Group and I am looking forward to helping them rebuild the club. Now we need Goodison and all Evertonians to play their part in getting behind the players in this important season so we can move into our fabulous new stadium as a Premier League team” said the Scotsman in an official statement.

New owners' first decision: Dyche is out

As Everton manager, Moyes led them to the 2009 FA Cup Final and four European campaigns, and he has also managed Manchester United and West Ham United, where he notably won the UEFA Europa Conference League. It’s not so interesting now, but it’s worth to know that before Moyes, the Friedkin Group also enquired about Graham Potter, but they were late, as he was already in discussion with West Ham by then.
