Villa Park braced for Champions League thriller as Liverpool arrive

The Reds and Aston Villa collide in a huge top-five showdown as Bournemouth and the rest of the Premier League watch nervously (Friday 10 pm)
Aston Villa and Liverpool meet tonight at Villa Park (10 pm) in a match that could reshape the entire race for next season's UEFA Champions League.
With two rounds remaining in the Premier League season, Liverpool and Villa sit fourth and fifth respectively on 59 points - positions currently enough to secure qualification for Europe's elite competition.
But the situation remains dangerously tight.
AFC Bournemouth, currently sixth with 55 points, are still mathematically alive in the race and hoping for late drama. Villa, in particular, face an extremely difficult finish to the campaign, with matches against Liverpool tonight and Manchester City still to come.
If Unai Emery's side lose both games and Bournemouth win their final two fixtures, Villa could miss out entirely. Yet the Birmingham club still hold another powerful card in their hands.
Emery's team will face Freiburg in the UEFA Europa League final in Istanbul on Wednesday, and victory there would automatically secure Champions League football regardless of their final league position.
That scenario would also have major consequences elsewhere in the Premier League table, potentially opening the door for sixth place to qualify as well - something supporters of Bournemouth, Brighton & Hove Albion and Brentford are following closely.
All of it adds another layer of chaos to one of the most unpredictable Premier League finishes in recent memory.
Villa arrive under pressure after taking only one point from their last three league matches, including a frustrating 2-2 draw against Burnley last time out. There is also a growing feeling that Emery's squad has shifted much of its focus toward the Europa League final.
Liverpool, meanwhile, know victory tonight would almost certainly seal their return to the Champions League under Arne Slot.
The Reds have struggled in recent high-profile fixtures, collecting just one point from clashes against Manchester United and Chelsea, and Slot openly admitted concern over his side's poor away form.
"One of the reasons we are still fighting for qualification is the number of points we've dropped away from home," the Liverpool manager said.
"Too often this season we failed to win games Liverpool would normally be expected to win."
Liverpool's away record underlines the problem: seven wins, three draws and eight defeats on the road, leaving them only ninth in the league's away table.
Villa striker Ollie Watkins believes his side can make life difficult once again for the visitors.
"It's always special playing Liverpool at Villa Park," Watkins said. "We usually perform well against them here and I'm sure our fans will enjoy this final home game of the season."
The previous meeting between the sides came at Anfield in November, when Liverpool secured a 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Ryan Gravenberch.
