Why Western Stima are languishing in red zone

Owino says a blunt striking force has affected their performance this season

Western Stima centre back Kennedy Owino has singled out a blunt striking front for their poor performance in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKF PL).

Stima are among the handful of teams flirting with relegation this season, a run which Owino squarely blames on their forward line for flapping clear cut chances on match days.

The towering defender who returned to the club in February after a rather unsuccessful stint at Gor Mahia raised concerns over their wastefulness in front of the goal as the Kisumu-based club has scored two goals in their last five matches.

"Our main undoing has been scoring. We have been playing well but it is worrying that we are not converting our chances. We can only win matches through scoring goals. If our forward line can step up, then we will easily beat the drop. I understand it is an area the technical bench is working on and hopefully, we will get a solution, " he said.

Besides lamenting on the dull striking front for their mounting relegation fears, the former Sony Sugar noted that the wholesome changes rung in the previous transfer window in the playing unit affected their winning rhythm.

Stima had a near overhaul in their unit in February after scores were alleged said to be involved in match manipulation.

"We had new players joining the club in the last transfer window and hence the bench needed time come up ensure they gel. The break which followed the next month also worsened the situation," he said.

Despite the poor run, Owino believes that the experience he gained for the short spell he had at Gor will help the club escape relegation.

Owino joined Gor in September last year and left without making an appearance in a competitive match for the record champions.

" I gained a lot of experience and exposure at Gor which I believe will go a long way in ensuring that Stima beats the drop. I strongly feel that we will keep a firm grip on our top flight status," he added.
