France’s Sports Minister issued an emergency midnight statement after the end of the season was marred by hooligan riots at two matches

The French state has a serious problem — a very serious problem. Scenes of absolute madness from Nantes and Nice are spreading across the world. Stadiums that should be temples of sport have turned into battlegrounds for violent armed invasions, while terrified footballers literally ran for their lives in front of stampeding masked hooligans. France hangs its head in shame, confronted with the brutal truth that it has lost the war against its own ultras.

The match between Nantes and Toulouse turned into a horror movie in a matter of seconds. Furious over their club’s relegation, masked hooligans broke through security barriers in a savage charge and stormed onto the pitch.

Within moments, the field was covered with lit flares and smoke bombs. Players from both teams, in complete shock and fearing for their lives, rushed toward the tunnel while the mob closed in behind them.

Legendary coach Vahid Halilhodzic was left standing alone in the chaos, using his own body to protect his players, before eventually leaving the stadium in tears under the protection of the gendarmerie.

The situation on the French Riviera was no less dramatic. The final whistle in the Nice–Metz match triggered a full-scale mobilization of hooligan forces. Enraged by a disastrous season that had dragged the club into the dangerous relegation playoff zone, Nice ultras launched a destructive rampage.

Blinded by fury, the fans bombarded the VIP section with flares and hard objects, forcing club officials to desperately seek cover. The mob then charged toward the tunnel with the clear intention of breaking into the dressing rooms and physically confronting the players. Tragedy was avoided only thanks to the bodies of security stewards and the swift, forceful intervention of the police.

French media and the public woke up this morning in complete shock. Sports Minister Marina Ferrari declared that the line had been crossed and that the state would launch a frontal assault on football hooliganism. Authorities are now announcing harsh punishments unlike anything France has seen before — from points deductions to lifetime stadium bans and prison sentences for the ringleaders.
