The mood in the camp of Lions of Teranga is far from ideal
This is the first World Cup with an extended number of participants, so it was hard to choose the ‘group of death’ this time around, considering there are many really weak participants which are now competing at the biggest stage. Unfortunately, Senegal is a group which proved to be a very tough one. Apart from the favorites for the title France, the Lions of Teranga also have to face Norway, which was almost unanimously named one of the dark horses of the tournament. To make things worse, Senegal lost the first match to France, while Norway easily defeated outsiders Iraq. So, the game against the Vikings is a crucial one, as they need a win in order to compete for the second place and the knockout round. But things are far from ideal in the Senegal camp.
According to Sport News Africa, the first issue is a contract extension for Pape Thiaw. Senegal coach, who got them another AFCON title (subject to a legal battle with Morocco) is still operating without a contract. The Senegalese federation was quick to deny claims that Thiaw refused to board the plane for the USA due to contract issues, but the matter is not resolved yet. Several sticking points reportedly exist in the discussions between the two parties. According to sources, this matter must be resolved quickly, otherwise FIFA's legal committee will be of great interest if a coach operates without a contract, which is not permitted.
The second problems is the food in the camp. The hotel in New Brunswick, New Jersey, is disappointing to the entire delegation and apparently the meals are not satisfactory in team of needs, especially for such athletes as footballers. Players are even allowed to use external platforms to order their own meals. The third problem revolves around bonuses. When AFCON was finished, CAF paid all bonuses to the Federation, yet some sources suggest the players haven't received any payment. This raises many questions on the eve of a crucial match against Norway.
