The red-and-whites win 1-0 at Celta to keep up the pace at the top of La Liga
Girona's fairy tale continued on Sunday afternoon as the red-and-whites clinched a narrow victory over Celta Vigo. Portu's first-half header secured three points for the visitors and propelled them past Real Madrid to the top of La Liga. The win extended Girona's unbeaten league run to 14 games, maintaining their impressive form in European football this season.
Facing a Celta side fighting for survival, Girona aimed to maintain pressure on their title rivals. The visitors dominated early exchanges, with Artem Dovbyk's header testing Vicente Guaita. Despite the sky blues' resilience in the first half, Girona capitalized on Portu's clinical finish on 20 minutes, assisted by Miguel Gutierrez, to take the lead at the break.
Although Celta showed glimpses of threat, including Luca de la Torre's well-saved effort early in the second half, they failed to capitalize on opportunities. Despite a solid defensive effort, Celta succumbed to defeat, marking their seventh one-goal loss of the season. Girona's victory not only helped them bounce back from their midweek Copa del Rey exit but also showcased their resilience and determination to maintain their strong league position.
