Action has been pencilled to throw off this weekend, Saturday, 18 October, with Nyayo set to host all top league matches, despite the new format of play

Kenya Handball Federation (KHF) has finally implemented a new format for the men’s league, with the top 12 finishers from the 2024/25 season forming the top-tier league.

The new format will see the men’s league run on a home-and-away basis, unlike previously, where action was round-robin based.

What is more, the bottom two teams will be relegated to the national league, while a similar number will gain promotion from the lower tier.

Action has been pencilled to throw off this weekend, Saturday, 18 October, with Nyayo set to host all top league matches, despite the new format of play.

The top-tier league will be headlined by league and Super Cup champions, National Cereals and Produce Board (NCPB), who now should expect tough competition from, among others, former league champions Ulinzi Shooters, 2024 Cup winners Equity HC, Strathmore University, and General Service Unit (GSU), among others.

Two relatively new sides, having played for a season before the league was split, Kisiwa Polytechnic and Lions, have made it to the league, alongside Desert Scorpions, UOE Pippers, KU Hybrids, Daystar Falcons, and Black Mamba.

“Everything is in place, and the changes have been agreed on. For now, the three leagues, including the women’s, will run at Nyayo, but the venue for the national league could change as action unfolds,” KHF fixtures secretary Charles Omondi confirmed.

The women’s league, meanwhile, has expanded to 16 from 12 teams and reverted to the round-robin format as opposed to the home-and-away setup run in the last few seasons.

Ulinzi Sharks headline the women’s league alongside record champions Nairobi Water, fast-rising Daystar, and NCPB Women.

“We are banking on the competitiveness of the two leagues to attract sponsors for both the league and Cup competitions.

We are also expecting a ripple effect on the national teams, since a tougher league creates better players,” Omondi adds.
