Speaking during the Kalakoda event’s weigh-in on Thursday, 14 May, the duo of George ‘King George’ Onyango and Martin ‘Tiger’ Achebi, were all in high spirits, hours ahead of their super welter weight and welterweight contests, which will close the show on the morning of Saturday, 16 May.

“I feel great, so ready for tomorrow,” co-headliner Achebi, who will fight in his second bout under the Kalakoda umbrella, said. “Feeling a bit nervous, which is normal, but pretty confident in the work I have put in during camp, which has been tremendous.”

With an 8-1-0 record, Achebi will place his unbeaten status on the line, when he comes up against Uganda’s Abaasi Sseguya, in what is slated to be a six-round contest.

“The last couple of weeks I have been focusing on my opponent, and all I’ll ask him is to be ready for a long and tough night,” Achebi, a former Muay Thai fighter added.

In his last fight, Achebi grabbed the attention of the fans after securing a second-round Technical Knockout (TKO) win over compatriot John Egesa at the same venue.

Shortly following him into the ring on the night will be the towering Onyango, who will fight for his first major belt - the East and Central African Super Welterweight title - in what is billed as the main event.

The 29-year-old, who will headline a show for the third time in his career, will battle Tanzania’s Benjamin Mchunguzi in a gruelling 10-round contest.

“It’s either he [Mchunguzi] retires, or be saved by the referee,” a calm but confident Onyango said of his biggest fight on home soil. “I don’t see him lasting beyond the fifth round.”

On the strategy he will use to land his biggest accolade yet, the man with a 12-3-1 record added: “Having studied him, I know he will not manage to contain my power. I will unleash my fury on him.”

On the undercard, Kenya’s Elizabeth Andiego will take on Tanzania’s Charles Mdemu in a super middleweight clash, while Sam ‘Mufasa’ Kugeluk will face countrymate Otieno Owenge in his Kalakoda debut.
