National government takes over completion of stalled Ksh 345m stadium project [PHOTOS]

The Kenyan government, through the Ministry of Youth Affairs, the Creative Economy, and Sports via Sports Kenya has officially taken over the construction and completion of the stalled Isiolo Stadium.

The move follows public outcry and protests by local youth, who demanded that the Isiolo County Government expedite work on the Ksh 345 million facility, which has remained incomplete for nearly six years.

Commissioned in early 2020, the stadium is designed to accommodate up to 10,000 spectators.

During a comprehensive inspection on Thursday, May 22, Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced that Sports Kenya had been tasked with developing new architectural designs for a modern, world-class stadium within two weeks.

"Following a thorough inspection of the Isiolo Stadium, I am pleased to announce that the Ministry, through Sports Kenya, will officially take over its construction and completion," read part of the Ministry’s statement.

CS Mvurya, was also accompanied by Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi, Isiolo Senator Fatuma Dullo, and Sports Fund CEO Nuh Mohamed Ibrahim during the site visit.

He futher directed Sports Kenya to redesign the stadium to meet international standards.

“I have directed Sports Kenya to submit new architectural plans within two weeks. Once finalized, the government will initiate all necessary processes to begin construction,” he stated.

The revamped facility will feature a VIP section, changing rooms for both home and away teams, and proper roofing to protect spectators from adverse weather conditions.

Additionally, the CS revealed that the government is constructing a Ksh 55 million talent development academy in Garbatula Ward, furthering efforts to nurture grassroots sports.

Isiolo Stadium joins a growing list of sports facilities across the country undergoing upgrades, including Bukhungu Stadium, Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay, Nyayo Stadium, and Kasarani.
