It was Nsubuga's first time tasting victory on Kenyan soil following several failed attempts

Ugandan Godfrey Nsubuga emerged the winner of the 2023 Teafields Trophy that was played at the par 72 Kericho Golf Club Course over the weekend.

The tournament was part of the Kenya Amateur Golf Championships (KAGC) series.

Coming from Mehta Golf Club in Lugazi, Uganda, Nsubuga won the title with his three over par 219 to win the coveted title.

On his final round three, he managed to fire three over 75 with his round two lead with two under par 70 and round one two over par 74 to claim the title.

Nsubuga had tried registering victory on Kenyan soil several times in vain.

He started off on a low before gaining momentum to emerge the winner, effectively dethroning Michael Alunga, who was the defending champion.

In addition to the mouth watering win, the Ugandan went home Ksh. 74,000 richer.

The win also saw him bag more points in the KAGC series, as well as improve his rankings in the World Amateur Gold Rankings.

Speaking after the win, Nsubuga revealed that the victory only inspired him to achieve more on Kenyan soil.

He has been finishing second in many series' across the country, and will be aiming to replicate his performance in the upcoming Nandi Bears Shield tournament at the 72 Nandi Bears golf club.

“The tournament was good and the course was so playable,” he said. “However, in round one, I had challenges in putting because of some grass on the greens, but in the second and third round, the greens were fantastic. That is why I played very well in the two finals rounds.”

With the taste of victory still fresh, Nsubuga has set his gaze at winning the Nandi Shield tournament that will be held next weekend at the par 72 Nandi Bears golf Club.

“This is done and my focus now turns to Nandi Shield next weekend. I hope to replicate the same," he added.

Kenyan John Lejirma, who hails from Kenya Railways Golf Club, birdied one hole at the front nine and at the 18th, but he dropped five shots in all, to also close the final day on 75 and a total of 221 to pocket Ksh. 44,400.

Vet Lab Sports Club's Ebill Omollo finished third, while Nandi Club's Nelson Koech finished in fourth place on 13 over par 229, three shots better than Elly Barno who also trains at Nandi Bears Club.
