It was the first meeting between Kenya and Uganda rugby legends.
The Battle of Veterans pitting Kenyan side Nondies Legends and Uganda Veterans held on Saturday 27 May at the Kyadondo Stadium in Uganda lived up to its purpose of reviving the glory days of some of the greatest Kenya and Uganda rugby players.
Nondies Legends made a run for their money after hitting Uganda Veterans 38-6 in the highly challenging match.
The 80 minutes of nostalgia marked the first meeting between the two sides. Oscar Osir’s charges struck through the evergreen Kevin Gachoka, Humprey Kayange, and current Kenya Simbas director Moses Mukabane.
Lavin Asego also scored for Nondies Legends, transporting the fanbase back to his heydays as Kenya’s deadliest fly-half. Asego made history as the first Kenyan to score 1000 points for Kenya in the World Series.
He has 1026 points for Kenya and together with Injera, they are the lone Kenyans to have hit the 1000-point mark in the series.
Speaking to Mozzart Sport, Nondies Legends playmaker Frank Mwauganga Mutuku attributed the generally good performance to the perfect bonding, saying that the Legends were ready to stamp authority in Uganda.
“I am very excited that we won over Uganda Vets with a big margin. We had a very good bonding session ahead of our game. We knew we were here for fun, brotherhood, and the win was impressive.
I look forward to more matches like this. The Legends loved each moment in Uganda,” an audibly excited Frank told Mozzart Sport.
Beyond the final score, the match served as a get-together moment for the legends who shared moments, reigniting their old glory.
