Kenya Sevens fans are set to enjoy a historic moment at the upcoming HSBC SVNS Perth 7s slated for Friday 24 to Sunday 26 January in Australia.
This is after the tournament organizers allocated a dedicated stand for Kenyan supporters.
The designated seating area, located in sections W103-W105, will offer fans a unique space to rally behind the Shujaa team.
The Kenya Rugby Union (KRU) broke the news on the team’s page.
“BREAKING NEWS: HISTORY IN THE MAKING! For the FIRST TIME EVER, the #Perth7s organizers have allocated a dedicated stand (W103-W105) to Kenyan Fans for the tournament next week in Australia,” the announcement read.
Shujaa fans are globally known for their unmatched energy and ability to electrify any atmosphere with their vibrant chants, colourful attire, and unwavering support for the team. This special announcement will only amplify this enthusiasm.
Year of many firsts for Kenyan fans
Adding to the historic occasion, enthusiasts will be treated to entertainment by renowned DJ Pierra Makena, who will make history as the first African DJ to perform in the main arena of the Perth 7s.
Her performance is expected to bring a vibrant touch of Kenyan culture to the global rugby stage.
This wave of excitement could not have come at a better time for the Kevin Wambua-coached side who face a daunting challenge in Pool C.
They have been pooled together with rugby powerhouses Fiji and New Zealand, as well as the ever-improving Uruguay.
The Shujaa team arrived in Australia on Saturday 18 January to a warm reception from Kenyan fans living in the country. This set the stage for an electrifying tournament.
Shujaa's history with Perth 7s opponents
Shujaa’s rivalry with Australia is laced with drama, most recently seen at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Kenya suffered a 21-7 defeat in their second game.
However, Shujaa bounced back spectacularly at the Cape Town 7s later that year, defeating the Aussies 19-12 in a spirited comeback despite being down to six men. With such a history, the upcoming clash in Perth against the hosts is set to be a fascinating encounter.
Facing Fiji is always a monumental task. The Pacific Islanders last beat Shujaa 31-12 at the 2023 Vancouver 7s, underscoring their dominance.
Kenya has proven they can defeat the formidable Fijians, especially highlighted by their remarkable 30-7 win in the 2016 Singapore 7s final, which marked their first-ever HSBC Sevens leg victory.
This iconic victory continues to inspire Shujaa as they gear up for another match against one of the world’s top teams.
Uruguay, the final team in the pool, may lack the pedigree of Australia and Fiji but cannot be overlooked. Recently promoted to the HSBC Sevens circuit, the South Americans have proven to be tenacious.
