The tournament, which will bring together 12 of Africa’s top men’s sevens nations, had initially been scheduled for 20-21 June at the SPARC Complex in Cascavelle before it was postponed due to public health concerns linked to the Ebola outbreak in parts of Africa.
The postponement was announced on Friday, 12 June, with the Mauritius Rugby Federation citing force majeure circumstances following public health guidance related to the evolving Ebola situation in the region.
“The Mauritius Rugby Federation regrets to announce the postponement of the Official Africa Men’s Sevens Series 2026, originally scheduled for 20-21 June at the SPARC complex in Cascavelle,” the federation said at the time.
The decision followed a Cabinet-level review and consultations involving Rugby Africa, the Mauritius Rugby Union, the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, and World Rugby.
Authorities said the move was precautionary and aimed at safeguarding players, match officials, tournament staff, and the Mauritian community while the public health situation continued to be assessed.
At the time of the postponement, Rugby Africa and the Mauritius Rugby Union stressed that no Ebola Virus Disease cases had been reported among participating teams, officials, tournament staff, or within Mauritius.
The decision came just two days after Uganda Rugby announced that the Rugby Cranes Sevens would not participate in the tournament due to travel restrictions imposed by Mauritius on travellers arriving from Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan.
Uganda cited the restrictions, introduced amid the ongoing Ebola outbreak in the region, as the reason for its withdrawal.
As of June 2026, Uganda had recorded 19 confirmed cases and two deaths, while the wider outbreak originating in neighboring DRC had been classified by the World Health Organization as a Public Health Emergency of International Concern.
Despite the postponement, Rugby Africa President Herbert Mensah assured participating unions and other stakeholders that the tournament would be rescheduled.
Following months of consultations and planning, the confirmation of the 3-4 October dates now allows participating unions to resume preparations for one of the continent’s premier sevens competitions.
Kenya Morans had been drawn in Pool C alongside Zimbabwe, Burkina Faso, and Morocco.
Hosts Mauritius were placed in Pool A alongside South Africa, Zambia, and Nigeria, while Pool B initially featured Madagascar, Uganda, Ghana, and Tunisia. Senegal was later included following Uganda’s withdrawal.
The tournament is expected to provide a major platform for Africa’s leading sevens nations as they battle for continental honors and international qualification opportunities.
