Celebrated USA men’s sevens winger Perry Baker, has officially announced his retirement from playing rugby. The speedster will transition into a coaching role, marking the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
His accolades are extensive, including two Rugby World Cup Sevens appearances, 71 HSBC Sevens tournaments, and two World Rugby Player of the Year awards. He is expected to serve as an assistant coach in the USA Men’s Sevens team through the end of the year.
Reflecting on his retirement, Baker expressed gratitude to those who supported him along the way.
“After an incredible 10 years representing the USA Men’s 7s program, the time has come for me to step away from the game that has shaped so much of my life,” he shared.
He went on to thank his family, teammates, coaches, and fans, emphasizing the personal significance of his rugby journey, especially the impact it had on his life outside of sport.
“Year one of my journey was especially life-changing as I met my amazing wife, and together we built our family. To my wife and family, I could not have done this without your endless support and love,” he continued.
As he shifts to a coaching role, he brings with him a wealth of experience and a dedication to give back to the sport that shaped him.
“As I step into the next chapter, I carry with me all the lessons, memories, and connections this game has given me. I’m excited for what’s to come and how I can continue giving back to this amazing sport,” he concluded.
Baker’s rugby journey began in an unlikely place: the football field.
After participating in a Philadelphia Eagles training camp, he discovered rugby, which quickly became his new passion.
Rising through the ranks of the Florida and Tiger Rugby scenes, Baker was invited to the USA Rugby residency program in Chula Vista in 2014, where he made his Sevens Series debut under then head coach Mike Friday.
His explosive debut season landed him on the World Rugby Rookie of the Year shortlist in 2014-15, and he solidified his role on the team by leading the Eagles in tries scored during the 2015-16 season, finishing second overall on the Sevens Series with 48 tries.
Baker’s journey to greatness continued in 2017 when he was named World Rugby Men’s Sevens Player of the Year, an honour he would receive again in 2018 after surpassing Zack Test as USA's all-time leading try scorer.
That same year, Baker played a pivotal role in securing the USA’s first gold medal on home soil at the Las Vegas Sevens.
Throughout his decade-long career, he became the USA Men’s Sevens all-time leader in tries scored and currently ranks second in HSBC Sevens Series history.
