Former KCB Rugby utility back and Kenya Simbas international Darwin Mukiza has joined the Bankers’ technical bench, as the backs coach for the 2024/2025 Kenya Cup season.
Known as the 'Smiling Assassin', Mukidza was KCB’s top point-scorer for several seasons and now looks to bring the same influence in his coaching role.
He takes over from Mark Mshila, who departed alongside long-serving head coach Curtis Olago at the end of last season.
The Vihiga High School alumnus, who is yet to officially retire from club rugby, recently showcased his skills for the Kenya Legends, earning the Man-of-the-Match award. He was a key player as Kenya Legends defeated Uganda Legends 24-15.
That marked the second consecutive year Kenya Legends claimed the title, following a dominant 69-18 aggregate win over Uganda in 2023.
Mukidza retired from international rugby before the 2023 season, having made his Kenya Simbas debut in 2015 against Portugal and earning 47 caps over his eight-year career.
He was the Simbas' top scorer in both points and tries. He also represented Kenya Sevens in 16 matches.
In 2022, Mukidza helped the Simbas secure a runner-up finish in the Rugby Africa Cup and participated in the World Cup Repechage. His club career included stints with Mombasa RFC, Mwamba RFC, and KCB RFC.
Mukidza joins former teammate Oliver Mang’eni, the new head coach, and will work alongside forwards coach Dennis Mwanja.
Kenya Sevens strength and conditioning coach Andrew Amonde is also expected to be part of the technical team. Mukidza aims to guide KCB back to Kenya Cup glory after their recent title loss to Kabras RFC.
The Bankers last won the championship in September 2021 at the Nandi Bears Club.
His first assignment will be the 2024 Impala Floodlit Tournament, where KCB will kick off their title defense in a quarter-final clash against Kenya University’s Blak Blad.
The tournament will kick off on Saturday 19 October starting with the thrilling quarterfinal stage before the battle heads to the semifinal hurdle on Saturday 26 October. The competition will culminate on Saturday 2 November when the finals will be staged.
