Both the Kenya Cup and the second tier KRU Championship will kick off next weekend
The new 2021/2022 Kenya Cup season and the Kenya Rugby Union Championship campaign are both set to commence next weekend Saturday 27 November 2021.
In the top tier Kenya Cup, normalcy is expected to resume after an unprecedented 2020 season that was the first to be played after the onset of the novel coronavirus pandemic. In the campaign that saw Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) lift their fourth consecutive title and an eighth overall title after defeating Kabras Sugar in a thrilling extra time finale, there was no promotion to or relegation from the top tier as it was the only rugby campaign that was played. Also, only eleven teams participated after Homeboyz Rugby decided to sit out of the season citing Covid-19 concerns.
In the second tier Championship, Shamas Foundation Rugby and Kabarak University became the sides that earned promotion from the third tier after booking the two slots that were up for grabs.
Shamas managed to narrowly edge Daystars Falcons 17-13 to book their ticket to the second tier as Kabarak University also had to dig deep in defeating Kitale 22-20 at the St. Anthony’s School in Kitale to seal promotion.
The two then proceeded to a final to determine the overall winner of the third tier nationwide league and Shamas had the upper hand after winning 39-8 in the final played yesterday at the RFUEA Ground.
Both teams replaced Kisii RFC and Mombasa RFC in the second tier league.
