The one-day tournament, organised by Nondescripts RFC, brought together eight Kenya Cup teams and served as a curtain raiser for the highly anticipated 2025 National Sevens Circuit.
While the on-pitch action was fiercely contested, the off-pitch execution of the event won just as much praise.
From punctuality, with matches beginning at 9:00 am sharp and wrapping up by 6:00 pm, to thoughtful details like player meals, the event exceeded expectations. Teams were served biryani, fresh fruits, and several hydration stations, a gesture that did not go unnoticed.
The grand final truly stole the limelight. Finalists Mwamba RFC and Strathmore Leos were ushered onto the pitch in style, each led by horses draped in their team flags. Strathmore Leos went on to win the tournament after defeating Mwamba 21-5.
The day concluded with fans gathering for a viewing party of the international test match where South Africa’s Springboks thrashed Italy 45-0, before the night transformed into a festive celebration.
After the tournament, Mozzart Sport caught up with coaches and players who were unanimous in their praise for the tournament.
Former Kenya Sevens' star, now Nakuru RFC coach, Oscar Ouma, commended the format, noting that it was a great build-up ahead of the upcoming circuit.
"The tournament has been good. We got to try different plays and see what works for the team. It’s a great way to build match fitness and team chemistry ahead of the circuit," Ouma offered.
Former Shujaa ace Lavin Asego, who is now Mwamba RFC coach, lauded the standards set, urging teams to take notes ahead of the circuit.
"Kudos to Nondies! The tournament was well organised. They’ve set the standard. All other hosts for the National 7s Circuit need to take notes," he said.
Strathmore Leos coach Willis Ojal also emphasised the tournament’s value, lauding his charges for the emphatic win.
"A very good preseason tournament, very worthwhile, very good competition. We’ve enjoyed it," he said
Impala RFC coach Louis Kisia, who is also the Kenya Sevens assistant coach, highlighted the developmental aspect.
"It’s been a great tournament. We had the chance to use 18 players and gave everyone a chance to test themselves ahead of the circuit," he uttered.
On his side, Amon Wamalwa, who plays for Kenya Harlequin, was thrilled with the standards set.
"Nondies, that was a proper tournament. Hats off. You’ve set the bar high," he uttered.
With the tournament now behind them, the teams will be looking to right their wrongs as they gear up for the Driftwood 7s slated for Saturday, 26 to Sunday, 27 July in Mombasa.
