The Trojans made their maiden division 1 performance during the Tisap 7s.
University of Eldoret (UoE) Trojans’ head coach Sheldon Munoko has expressed pleasure after the students made an impressive division I appearance during the Tisap 7s played at the Eldoret Sports Club over the weekend.
The Trojans were promoted to Division I category after the Christie 7s, where they had accumulated a total of 77 points to top the log.
They started their Tisap 7s title hunt with a bang, sharing 19-19 spoils with Mwamba RFC in a brutally physical opening match. They then lost 24-5 to Nakuru RFC in the closely contested second pool match, before going down 26-5 to Tisap 7s champions Nondies RFC.
1/3 win in their pool saw them drop to the challenge trophy quarter-finals where they went down 45-0 to Kenya Harlequins in a match the was Amon Wamalwa-dominated.
The Trojans further dropped to the 13th place semis where they managed a 15-10 win over Mombasa RFC before their journey ended in a 14-10 loss to Homeboyz RFC in the 13th place final.
Despite the rollercoaster of performances, coach Munoko expressed pleasure in their performance, noting that they still had room for improvement. He said that their win against Mwamba was made possible by the home advantage. The Trojans are located approximately 9 kilometers away from Eldoret town.
“Being our maiden division one appearance we wanted to learn, express ourselves, and show what we can do. I am glad we did that,” he offered.
Coach Munoko also noted that the boys would be eyeing improved performance come Kabeberi 7s. They missed the Division I slot and will be back to stun Division II opponents.
“As a team, we saw how important ball retention and awareness is. We will be more lethal on our setpieces and improve the bench,” Munoko disclosed.
As the 2023 National 7s Circuit slowly comes to a close, Munoko was pleased that his charges picked the necessary lessons, and will be looking to bounce back and retain the Division I slot.
The coach further pointed out that they would include the services of key players like Anthony Omondi, Edwin Yatich, and Vincent Ogolla.
“Going into Kabeberi we will recall four of our senior players who were on rest, and use the experience gained in Tisap to bring the intensity to Kabeberi 7s,” he concluded.
The University of Eldoret Trojans is the only team in Eldoret competing in the championship league. Other clubs like Moi University Arsonists and Eldoret RFC are in the nationwide league.
