Cheruiyot secured his place in the Kenyan team after storming to victory in the 1,500m final at the Ulinzi Sports Complex, clocking 3:36.1.
His performance capped a dominant display that saw him win his semifinal in 3:39.64 before sealing top spot in the final.
Heading into the continental showpiece scheduled for Tuesday, 12 to Sunday, 17 May, the Bomet County native is confident of delivering.
“We expect to perform well in Ghana. We will head back to camp to sharpen our speed and fine-tune our preparations, and hopefully everything will fall into place when we get to Ghana. I am targeting either gold or silver,” he said.
Before heading to Ghana, Cheruiyot will kick off his international season at the Kip Keino Classic, where he is set to compete in the 1,500m.
He will then shift focus to the 5,000m at the Xiamen Diamond League as part of a packed campaign.
“Beyond the Diamond League meetings, I’m also focusing on the Commonwealth Games and the Ultimate Championships,” he added.
Cheruiyot heads into the season on the back of a competitive 2025 campaign that saw him consistently challenge elite fields on the global stage.
He opened his international circuit with a sixth-place finish at the Grand Slam Track, posting 3:35.61 in the 1,500m.
One of his standout performances came at the Meeting de Rome, where he clocked 3:29.75 to finish second, narrowly behind Azeddine Habz, who won in 3:29.72.
He also impressed at the Oslo Bislett Games, finishing fourth in the mile (3:49.06), before placing seventh at the Prefontaine Classic with a time of 3:47.71.
Cheruiyot rounded off his Diamond League season strongly, claiming second place at the Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in 3:33.35 and finishing fourth at Weltklasse Zürich with a time of 3:30.13.
Earlier this year, he signaled his readiness with a podium finish at the Sirikwa Classic Cross Country Tour, placing third in the men’s 2km race in 5:54.
