
Wanza, Maxime triumph at Continental University Cross Country

This was the fifth edition of the universities extravaganza.
Kenyatta University's Diana Wanza starred as the continent gathered at Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) for the All Africa Universities Cross Country championship winning the women's 10km race in 38 minutes and three seconds.

Her time was more than two minutes faster than second-placed Nicole Van Der Mew who was second in 40 minutes and 15 seconds, representingJohannesburg University. Bomet University's Diana Lagat competed the podium finishes in 42 minutes and 19 seconds.
"Having online session helped me a great deal to prepare for this championship As I had time to be in a proper camp and train alongside other athletes. When in-person schooling opened up, I kept with the training programme and I am happy for the win today," said Wanza in an interview.
In the men's races, Kenya lost the title to University of Johannesburg's Maxime Chaumeton who stopped the clock in 30 minutes 54 seconds ahead of Egerton University's Geoffrey Chirchir who clocked 31 minutes and 33 seconds for silver ahead of Emmanuel Kipng'etich of Kenyatta University who came home in 32 minutes and one second.

In the relay race, Kenyatta University who were represented by Wanza, Christine Nkirankas, John Kariuki and Ngetich were beaten to the title by their University of Johannesburg counterparts who ran a tactical race to finish in 27 minutes and 29 seconds while the Kenyans settled for second place in 28 minutes and 52 seconds.
Meru University of Science and Technology, represented by the quartet of Sheila Kipruto, Caroline Wambui, Wilson Mugai and Kiprop Machomu completed the podium places in the relay, clocking 29 minute and 12 seconds. South Africa’s Tshwane University of Science and Technology came in fourth place ahead of hosts JKUAT in 30 minutes and 51 seconds as the hosts clocked 33 seconds and 31 seconds.
The championship, dominated by Kenyan varsity team had representation from the South African sides as well as Uganda's Makerere University.
