The Ethiopian runner becomes the youngest athlete to win the race
Ethiopia's Yalamzef Yehualaw has broken Kenyan women dominance in the London Marathon after coasting to victory in the 42nd edition of the race on Sunday.
The 10km world record holder set in February clocked an impressive 2:17:26 becoming the youngest athlete to win the race.
Prior to this year's race, Kenya had won the past six editions of the marathon with Joycline Jepkosgei who finished behind Yehualaw claiming victory in October last year after clocking 2:17:43.
Jepkosgei clocked 2:18:07 with Megertu Alemu of Ethiopia coming in third after two hours, eighteen minutes and thirty two seconds.
World silver medalist over the distance Judith Korir settled for a fourth place finish while Mary Ngugi who was making her debut in the London Marathon finishing seventh. The two Kenyan runners clocked 2:18;43 and 2:20:22 respectively.
The Hamburg Marathon champion, alongside Jepkosgei broke from the rest with around seven kilometres remaining with the former injecting breathtaking pace in the later stages to shake off the challenge from the latter.
Jepkosgei, despite losing her title, said she was satisfied with the second place finish.
"My preparations this time round was even better than that of last year. The race was tactical especially after the pacemakers dropped off. At some point, no one wanted to surge forward for fear of burning out. I am grateful for finishing second and making to the podium," said the KDF runner.
