Martin Zubimendi, for the first time, talked about the decision to reject Liverpool's offer

Martin Zubimendi, indeed, is a rare bird. How else can anyone explain his decision to reject the offer of one of the greatest clubs in the world to stay in his boyhood club? Instead of playing in the Champions League with Liverpool, he opted to settle for the UEFA Europa League with his txuri-urdin (white-blue in Basque). Something as rare as Halley's Comet in today's football.

Although his choice stunned everyone, the 25-year-old calmly clarified his decision in an interview with Marca by declaring what his current club represents for him.

"For me, Real Sociedad is my life, I think I've spent half my life there. A large percentage of what I am is part of Real Madrid, it's my life," the midfielder said.

As for the eventual pressure by his friends from San Sebastian to refuse the Reds' bid, the Spaniard claimed he made the choice all by himself.

"No, my friends are sure that whatever I decide will be the best. There is no pressure at all," concluded Zubimendi.

Even though he'll participate in the second-tier competition of European club football and his Real Sociedad are only 12th in La Liga after four rounds - while Liverpool hold the leading Premier League spot alongside Man City - Zubimendi is genuinely happy. And sometimes, that's all that counts.
