Wafula was among 37 judges sworn in on Monday, 4 May, at State House during a ceremony presided over by President William Ruto and Chief Justice Martha Koome.
The veteran football administrator was appointed as a judge of the High Court and the Environment and Land Court, marking yet another major step in a career that has seen him rise through both sports administration and the legal profession.
In a congratulatory message, Ingwe hailed Wafula as one of their own while highlighting his contribution to the club over the years.
“Congratulations, Mr Bernard Murunga Wafula, on your appointment and swearing-in as a judge of the High Court. Murunga is our former Deputy Secretary General, a super fan, and a great statistician of the club,” AFC Leopards said in a statement.
Wafula served as AFC Leopards’ deputy secretary general after being elected during the club’s 2019 National Executive Committee (NEC) elections.
He was elected alongside then chairman and club legend Dan Shikanda, secretary general Oliver Sikuku, and treasurer Maurice Chichi.
His journey later shifted from football administration into high-level legal and sports arbitration work, eventually earning him appointment as chairman of the Sports Disputes Tribunal (SDT) on 4 June, 2025, succeeding John Ohaga on a five-year term.
The SDT plays a crucial role in resolving sports-related disputes involving governance issues, disciplinary matters, player eligibility cases, and conflicts within sports federations before escalation to conventional courts.
Wafula’s appointment to the High Court now places him among the country’s top judicial officers while also adding another significant achievement to the long list of football personalities making an impact beyond the game.
Other judges sworn in alongside Wafula included Robinson Ondieki Kebabe, Roseline Akinyi Oganyo, Paul Kipkosgei Rotich, Joyce Mkambe Gandani, Joseph Maloba Were, Richard Kipkemoi Koech, Emmanuel Omondi Bitta, David Wanjohi Mburu, Dominic Kipkemoi Rono, and Winnie Narasha Molonko.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by several senior government officials, among them Deputy President Kithure Kindiki and Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi.
