Marseille are looking to build on their recent upturn in form, while Liverpool seek stability in a season defined by inconsistency at home but resilience on the European stage.

With only two matchdays left, the margins could hardly be tighter: Marseille sit 16th on nine points, while Liverpool are ninth with 12, leaving both sides firmly in the qualification mix.

Marseille arrive in buoyant attacking form. Roberto De Zerbi’s side have scored an extraordinary 22 goals across their last five matches in all competitions, including emphatic wins over Angers (5-2) and Bayeux (9-0).

In Ligue 1, they are the division’s top scorers and sit within touching distance of the summit despite recent defensive lapses.

In the Champions League, Marseille have recovered from losing three of their first four matches by winning their last two, scoring five goals in the process.

At home this season, Marseille boast a strong record, winning eight of 12 matches at the Vélodrome.

Team news for the hosts is relatively positive. Nayef Aguerd and Ruben Blanco remain unavailable, while Bilal Nadir is a doubt but not expected to miss out.

De Zerbi may recall Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who has seven goal contributions in six Champions League appearances, while Mason Greenwood remains the standout threat, having scored nine goals in his last seven games.

Liverpool’s form paints a contrasting picture. While unbeaten in 12 matches across all competitions, Arne Slot’s side have drawn four of their last five games, including a frustrating 1-1 home draw with Burnley.

In their last five outings, Liverpool have scored seven goals and conceded four. However, their Champions League performances have been far more convincing, highlighted by a statement 1-0 win away to Inter Milan.

The Reds average 3.17 total goals per Champions League match and rank among the competition’s leaders for expected goals and big chances created. Injuries remain a concern for Liverpool, with Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni, Alexander Isak and Stefan Bajcetic sidelined.

Mohamed Salah’s availability remains uncertain following AFCON, but Liverpool still possess significant attacking quality through Dominik Szoboszlai, Florian Wirtz, Cody Gakpo and Hugo Ekitike.

Florian Wirtz has six goal contributions in his last seven appearances, signalling improving form.

Historically, these sides last met in the 2008-09 Champions League, with Liverpool winning both encounters.

While that history offers limited relevance now, the attacking profiles of both teams are far more telling.

Key Pointers;

Over 2.5 goals has been recorded in five of Marseille’s six Champions League matches this season.

Nine of Marseille’s last 12 games have finished with more than 2.5 goals.

Marseille’s last 12 games across all competitions have averaged 4.25 total goals.

Liverpool’s six Champions League fixtures in 2025–26 have produced an average of 3.17 goals per match.

Liverpool rank third for expected goals (14.2) and fifth for big chances created (30) in this season’s Champions League.

All signs point towards an open, attacking contest in southern France. Marseille’s aggressive approach and Liverpool’s defensive vulnerabilities should combine to produce chances at both ends. With the quality of attackers on display and the stakes involved, goals look highly likely.

Prediction; Over 2.5 goals
