Arsenal enter the fixture sitting firmly at the top of the Premier League table, protected by a four-point cushion over Manchester City at the time of writing, while Spurs remain in eighth and could slip deeper into the chasing pack if things go wrong in the capital.

With the two rivals pursuing different goals but meeting under equally high pressure, Sunday’s showdown promises to be one of the most tactically intriguing derbies in recent memory.

Arsenal’s impressive run of defensive solidity was finally interrupted just before the international break as Mikel Arteta’s men were forced to settle for a dramatic 2-2 draw against Sunderland.

The Gunners had gone an extraordinary 812 minutes without conceding in the Premier League, but a late equaliser turned what seemed a routine win into a frustrating stumble.

Despite the disappointment, Arsenal continue to boast the strongest defensive record at home, conceding just one league goal at the Emirates this season.

Their dominance at home stretches further: the Gunners have won all four of their Premier League games at the Emirates while leading at both half-time and full-time in each of them.

Momentum is always fragile in elite football, and Arteta’s side face a challenging run of fixtures - Bayern Munich and Chelsea are on the horizon - making the derby a crucial moment to rebuild confidence.

Fortunately for Arsenal, the Emirates has become one of the most daunting grounds for visiting sides, and the Gunners’ exceptional structure, pressing intensity, and wide combinations make them formidable in front of their fans.

Tottenham, by contrast, arrive with one of the best away records in the league.

Thomas Frank’s side have collected 13 points from a possible 15 away from home - a tally unmatched by any other team this season.

Spurs have been more efficient, more direct, and far more dangerous on their travels than at home, where their form has stuttered with inconsistent performances and dropped points.

Their most recent outing produced a 2-2 draw with Manchester United, snatched from them by a last-minute Matthijs De Ligt header, denying them what could have been a season-defining victory.

However, there remain concerns around Tottenham’s attacking output. Spurs recently recorded their lowest-ever Expected Goals tally in a Premier League match during their 1-0 defeat to Chelsea, and across the season, only five teams have generated lower xG than their 11.7.

While they remain fluid and dangerous in moments, their reliance on moments of creativity rather than sustained construction has been a recurring problem.

Historically, the tide of the derby has shifted in Arsenal’s favour in recent years.

They have won five of the last six meetings and could secure four consecutive North London Derby victories for the first time in the Premier League era.

Tottenham’s last victory over Arsenal came at home in 2022; since then, North London has remained red.

Team news for this derby is as dramatic as the fixture itself. Arsenal have been hit by a devastating blow with the loss of Gabriel Magalhães, who could miss the remainder of 2025 following a hamstring tear on international duty.

Riccardo Calafiori is also yet to resume full training after a hip problem, leaving Arteta potentially forced to field a makeshift defensive line, with Cristhian Mosquera and Piero Hincapié expected to step in.

Further up the pitch, Arsenal face continued uncertainty. Martin Ødegaard and Kai Havertz remain sidelined, while Gabriel Martinelli, Viktor Gyokeres, and Noni Madueke are all doubts. Gabriel Jesus continues to recover from an ACL injury and is not expected to feature.

With so many absences, Arsenal’s depth will be tested, but their system cohesion has typically allowed them to cope with personnel changes.

Spurs, by contrast, have received a rare wave of good news.

Frank confirmed multiple players returning to fitness, including Pape Sarr, Lucas Bergvall, Randal Kolo Muani (in a mask), Mohammed Kudus, Archie Gray, Kota Takai, Ben Davies, and Radu Dragusin - who is close to his long-awaited ACL comeback.

Tottenham will, however, remain without Dominic Solanke, Yves Bissouma, Dejan Kulusevski, and James Maddison.

For the first time since 2014, Spurs approach a North London Derby without Harry Kane or Son Heung-min - players who contributed over a quarter of their derby goals in the past decade.

One area to watch closely will be set plays: Arsenal have scored more set-piece goals (10) than any team in the league, while Tottenham have conceded the fewest (2).

This matchup could become a decisive battleground if the game is tight.

Arsenal’s strength at home, combined with Tottenham’s build-up issues and their reliance on low-probability chances away from home, tilts the balance strongly toward the league leaders.

Even with a reshuffled back line, Arsenal’s collective defensive structure should be enough to limit Tottenham’s threat.

Key Pointers

- Arsenal are unbeaten at the Emirates this season

- Arsenal have won five of their last six meetings with Spurs

- Tottenham have managed just one win in their last four league matches

- Arsenal’s home wins this season have all been HT/FT victories.

Arsenal’s consistency, structure, and home supremacy give them the edge in another intense chapter of the North London Derby.
