The suspension follows weeks of speculation about Gecheo’s future amid reports of behind-the-scenes wrangles

The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) has suspended its Executive Director, Auka Gecheo, under unclear circumstances, effectively ending his tenure as the head of the regional football body.

Auka had served as CECAFA’s Executive Director for the past five years, having succeeded Nicholas Musonye, who led the organization for 21 years.

The former SuperSport East Africa General Manager’s hopes of enjoying a similarly long tenure were cut short after an Executive Committee meeting last week resolved to suspend him.

“The Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) wishes to inform stakeholders that, following an Executive Committee meeting chaired by the Acting President, Mr. Alexandre Muyenge, and held via Zoom on September 18, 2025, it was resolved to suspend Mr. Auka John Gecheo from the role of Executive Director of CECAFA,” read part of the official statement.

“The Executive Committee meeting followed an earlier consultative session of CECAFA presidents attended by seven member associations—Burundi, Eritrea, Djibouti, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Kenya, and Somalia.”

The post of executive director was created in 2020 after the CECAFA Statutes were amended following advice from the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

While the statement did not explicitly reveal the reasons behind the decision, it hinted at internal issues, stressing that the organization is “committed to upholding its values” and promising further communication in the coming weeks.

The suspension follows weeks of speculation about Gecheo’s future amid reports of behind-the-scenes wrangles.

Although unconfirmed, his troubles are believed to stem partly from a fallout with Kenya’s football federation (FKF).

It is alleged that disagreements arose between him and FKF in the lead-up to the CAF Women’s Champions League–CECAFA qualifiers, which were hosted in Kenya earlier this month.
