The importance of the upcoming tournament to the Scots is becoming clearer and clearer — this move has delighted absolutely everyone
A special edition £20 banknote inspired by Scott McTominay’s iconic bicycle-kick goal has been introduced by the Bank of Scotland.
The commemorative note was designed to celebrate Scotland national football team qualifying for the FIFA World Cup for the first time since 1998. Its artwork blends classic banknote styling with imagery recreating McTominay’s spectacular strike against Denmark.
Only 100 copies of the note have been produced. Half of them will be distributed through collector auctions, prize draws, and fan pop-up events taking place in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Scotland booked their ticket to the World Cup after defeating Denmark national football team 4-2 at Hampden Park back in November, with McTominay opening the scoring in memorable fashion through an overhead kick.
The midfielder reflected on the achievement by saying: “Reaching the biggest stage of world football is something every player dreams of, and I know it means everything to our fans. Moments like that belong to everyone who follows the team, so seeing my goal featured on a Scottish banknote feels incredibly special."
Funds raised from the auction and prize draw will go toward supporting Crisis Scotland, a charity helping people affected by homelessness across Scotland.
Supporters can participate in the online auction and prize draw until 11:00 on Friday, June 26, while additional opportunities to win one of the rare notes will be available at special fan zones in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Visitors there will attempt to unlock a vault using a number combination for a chance to claim one of the collectibles.
Emma Noble, chair of the Scottish executive committee at the Bank of Scotland, explained the idea behind the project: "Securing qualification in such dramatic fashion is a moment fans will never forget, and we wanted to mark it in a way that's rooted in Scottish identity."
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will feature 48 national teams and will be held between June 11 and July 19 across 16 cities in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Scotland are scheduled to face Haiti in Boston on June 14, Morocco on June 19 — also in Boston — before taking on Brazil in Miami on June 24.
