Crucial match for Arsenal in title race? West Ham want Survival — and to shake up top of the table

Reading Time: 3min | Sun. 10.05.26. | 11:04

Mikel Arteta’s side must be extremely cautious against the Hammers, who are fighting for survival, in what could prove to be a season-defining Premier League clash

A huge afternoon awaits in east London, where both ends of the Premier League table could be shaped by the outcome of Sunday’s clash between West Ham United and Arsenal at the London Stadium.

Arsenal arrive with momentum and belief surging through the squad. Their place in the Champions League final — the club’s first in 20 years — has transformed the mood around north London, replacing pressure with excitement and optimism.

However, the pressure is now firmly back on Mikel Arteta’s side after Manchester City comfortably defeated Brentford on Saturday, trimming the gap in the title race and ensuring Arsenal cannot afford any slip-up in east London.

With matches against Burnley and a heavily rotated Crystal Palace side still to come, this trip to West Ham could prove to be the defining moment of Arsenal’s campaign. Another victory would leave Arteta’s men within touching distance of ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League crown.

But West Ham have plenty on the line as well. The battle near the bottom remains fierce, and while even a point could be useful, recent results elsewhere — particularly Tottenham Hotspur picking up form — make a win far more valuable for the Hammers.

Since Nuno Espirito Santo took charge, West Ham have looked far more competitive than a relegation-threatened side. Their recent 3–0 loss to Brentford was harsher than their performance deserved, and there is belief they can trouble Arsenal.

Three seasons ago, a damaging result in east London shifted the balance of the title race toward Manchester City. This West Ham side, fighting for survival, has even greater motivation and enough quality to make life difficult for the visitors.

Arteta understands exactly how significant this weekend could be. His squad senses a rare opportunity, but also knows the margin for error has disappeared after City’s latest victory. Arsenal will nevertheless travel across London backed by confidence, momentum, and the belief of supporters dreaming of a historic title triumph.

As for team news, Arsenal escaped Tuesday’s exhausting encounter with Atletico Madrid without any new injuries, although rotation is expected after such a physically demanding match. Changes in the fullback areas are possible, while Kai Havertz is back available and could be used in attack to ease the burden on Viktor Gyokeres, who delivered an outstanding but draining performance in midweek.

There is less encouraging news elsewhere in the squad. Arteta confirmed that Jurrien Timber and Mikel Merino will not return this weekend, and there is growing uncertainty over whether either player will feature again before the season ends.
