Uruguay now face a daunting final-group assignment against Spain on Saturday, while Cape Verde will take on Saudi Arabia

Cape Verde continued their remarkable FIFA World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 2-2 draw against Uruguay at the Miami Stadium on Monday morning, securing a second consecutive stalemate in Group H and leaving the race for qualification wide open heading into the final round of matches.

Having already frustrated Spain in a goalless draw in their opening fixture, the African nation once again showed resilience and character to deny one of South America's traditional powerhouses.

Uruguay entered the match seeking their first victory after drawing 1-1 with Saudi Arabia, but they found themselves trailing midway through the first half when Cape Verde struck with a moment of brilliance.

Kevin Lenini opened the scoring in the 21st minute, curling a superb free-kick beyond the reach of the goalkeeper and into the bottom-right corner after Rodrigo Bentancur had conceded a foul in a dangerous area.

The goal stunned Uruguay, who had dominated possession and created several promising opportunities through Federico Valverde and Agustin Canobbio. Valverde twice came close with efforts from the edge of the area, while Canobbio saw a header blocked as Marcelo Bielsa's men searched for an equaliser.

Their pressure finally paid off in the 44th minute when Maximiliano Araujo reacted quickest inside the six-yard box, heading home from close range after Cape Verde failed to clear their lines.

Uruguay completed the turnaround deep into first-half stoppage time. Araujo again proved decisive, meeting a cross and directing a header across goal where Canobbio was perfectly positioned to poke the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead.

With momentum firmly on their side, Uruguay appeared set to take control of the contest after the break. However, Cape Verde remained organised and dangerous on the counter-attack.

Their persistence was rewarded in the 61st minute when substitute Helio Varela capitalised on a costly goalkeeping slip to calmly finish from close range and bring Cape Verde level at 2-2.

The equaliser shifted the complexion of the game and injected belief into the Cape Verde side, who nearly completed the comeback when Jamiro Monteiro fired narrowly over the crossbar and Sidny Lopes Cabral tested Uruguay with a long-range effort that drifted inches wide.

Uruguay thought they had regained the lead in the 68th minute when the ball found the back of the net, but celebrations were cut short after a VAR review identified an offside infringement in the build-up.

The South Americans pushed relentlessly for a winner in the closing stages. Rodrigo Bentancur saw a goal-bound header brilliantly blocked by the Cape Verde defence, while substitute Brian Rodriguez repeatedly delivered dangerous corners into the penalty area.

Despite sustained pressure and several late opportunities, Uruguay were unable to find a breakthrough as Cape Verde defended resolutely to secure another valuable point.

The result leaves Group H delicately poised. Spain lead the standings with four points following their 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia, while both Uruguay and Cape Verde sit on two points after drawing their opening two matches.

Uruguay now face a daunting final-group assignment against Spain on Saturday, while Cape Verde will take on Saudi Arabia knowing that a victory could secure a historic place in the knockout stages.
