Don't worry United fans - Maguire stays

Although Maguire's role this season was pretty marginalized, Man United decided to activate the clause and extend the deal with the Englishman until 2026

While most Man United fans expect reinforcements in the ongoing transfer window as well as several departures, the first move they made at Old Trafford was an - somewhat unforeseen - extension. The centre-back and former captain, Harry Maguire, extended his deal until 2026, or better said, the club activated the extension clause in his contract.

Even though the Englishman was among the players whose departures were expected shortly, United still decided to surprise their fans and extend the deal with the defender, whose performances were often mocked and made fun of. Not to mention €87 million the Red Devils splashed out to bring Maguire from Leicester in 2019, which never paid off.

The 31-year-old has lately had various injury issues - because of which he even had to miss EURO 2024 - but even when healthy, he did not have much of a role under Erik ten Hag. Based on the recent games, Ruben Amorim apparently counts on the robust defender, although the results are not a good recommendation.

Namely, Maguire played 90 minutes in each of the last three United's games, and the Red Devils lost all of them with a woeful goal difference of 0-7. When the club signed Matthijs de Ligt and Leny Yoro during the June Transfer Window, many saw that as Maguire's end with the Old Trafford crew. But, oh, were they wrong...
