The 2020-2021 Football Kenya Federation Premier League’s Most Valuable Player Erick Kapaito has joined twelve-time champions Tusker on a year-long deal after making a U-turn on Zambian Super League side Zanaco.
Zanaco, reportedly landed the forwards signature after supposedly agreeing on a year-long deal only for the transfer to fall through despite unveiling the player on their verified social media accounts.
The club unveiled Kapaito alongside immediate former Gor Mahia centre back Dennis Ng’ang’a.
Kapaito joins the beer makers after leaving Ethiopian side Arba Minch who were relegated to the second tier after finishing in the red zone in the past season.
Kapaito left Arba Minch alongside compatriot Bernard Ochieng' as regulations in the Ethiopia bar foreigners from playing for clubs plying trade in the lower leagues.
It is after leaving Minch that Kapaito began exploring various markets with the Zambian one winning his heart.
However, his bid to join Zanaco didn’t materialize after failing to agree on certain terms with the club.
Before Zanaco joined the race to land the Kenyan international, Tusker who are rebuilding after parting ways with more than half a dozen players had already registered interest.
“I'm glad to join Tusker and looking forward to get to the pitch and score goals. I thank the management and coach Robert Matano for giving me this chance to work to try and reclaim the league title,” said the former FC Talanta striker.
“It has been an eventful summer. I had talks with Zanaco in Zambia and trained with the team but things did not work out as we both expected. I made friends and family there and wish Ba Zanaco all the best in the season ahead,” he added.
The latest development means that the forward returns to the Kenyan league after two seasons in Ethiopia.
Kapaito, won the MVP as well as the top scorer’s award in 2021 courtesy of the 24 goals he scored for Kariobangi Sharks in the 2020-2021 season.
He also won the Kenya Premier League’s Most Valuable Player in 2017-2018 season which he finished with 16 goals.
Kapaito opened his national team goal account in March 2021 in a friendly match against Tanzania which ended 2-1 in favor of Harambee Stars at the Nyayo National Stadium.
