The winger could now become one of the latest young prospects handed an opportunity to establish himself in the national team setup
Kenya’s newest call-up Sammy Henia-Kamau is among the exciting young overseas-based talents coach Benni McCarthy is hoping can help shape the future of the national team ahead of next year’s AFCON finals.
The 20-year-old winger and forward, currently with Hull City AFC Under-21s, has earned his maiden Harambee Stars call-up for the June friendlies against Kyrgyzstan and Palestine after a steady rise through the English youth ranks.
Born in 2006 to a Kenyan father and an English mother, Henia-Kamau began his football journey with Jersey Bulls FC, where he quickly developed a reputation as a deadly attacking talent.
He scored 20 goals in 15 matches for the club’s Under-16 side and added six more for the Under-18s before becoming the youngest player in the club’s history to score a hat-trick for the senior team.
His rapid development earned him the prestigious Sid Guy Award at the Jersey FA Centre of Excellence in 2022.
His performances attracted the attention of Swansea City AFC, who handed him a scholarship in 2023.
At Swansea, he featured for both the Under-18 and Under-21 sides, scoring 10 goals in all competitions during his breakthrough season.
One of his standout moments came against Cardiff City, where he netted a hat-trick in the Professional Development League Cup as Swansea went on to reach the final.
His impressive displays saw him sign his first professional contract with Swansea before earning a move to Hull City in July 2025 following a successful trial period.
Since joining the Tigers, Henia-Kamau has become a regular for the Under-21 side, scoring four goals this season while continuing to impress with his direct attacking style.
He also announced himself during pre-season with a stunning free-kick against Grimsby Borough.
Although his current contract expires this June, there is growing optimism that Hull City could hand him a new deal as he continues pushing towards senior football.
Primarily deployed as a centre-forward or right winger, positions Harambee Stars have struggled to consistently fill in recent years, Henia-Kamau is viewed as a player capable of adding directness, pace and energy to Kenya’s attack.
The teenager is described as an explosive and highly dynamic forward who thrives on stretching defensive lines with his exceptional acceleration.
He is particularly dangerous in transition, often relied upon to exploit spaces behind defenders and quickly turn defence into attack.
When operating from wide areas, he is fearless in one-on-one situations, using quick footwork, close control and direct running to trouble defenders.
He is also comfortable cutting inside from the right flank and possesses the ability to finish with both feet.
His movement inside the box and intelligent off-the-ball runs have also made him a consistent goal threat throughout his youth career.
Beyond his attacking qualities, coaches highly rate his relentless work ethic and discipline off the ball.
He presses aggressively from the front, tracks back when possession is lost and constantly looks to contribute defensively for the team.
With Benni McCarthy openly stating his intention to recruit more players of Kenyan heritage abroad as he builds towards AFCON 2027, Henia-Kamau could now become one of the latest young prospects handed an opportunity to establish himself in the national team setup.
